BBC One to Adapt HIS DARK MATERIALS by Philip Pullman

BBC One has commissioned a television adaptation based on Philip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials trilogy. The series will be produced by New Line Cinema and Bad Wolf Productions. Doctor Who fans will recognize that name, and with good reason. Bad Wolf was founded by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner, who were behind the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, the Torchwood spinoff, and Da Vinci’s Demons. His Dark Materials will be filmed in Wales and will air on BBC One.

The book trilogy, which began with The Northern Lights in 1995, also consists of The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. It follows the story of a young orphan girl named Lyra in a world that mixes magic, science, and theology. After setting out to find a missing friends, Lyra is drawn into an adventure of magic, mystery, danger, and other worlds that she may have been fated to be a part of all along. On her journey, she crosses paths with an ally named Will, who can open doors to other planes of existence with a magical knife, and the two uncover the mystery surrounding Lyra’s family and her destiny to play a part in a war of celestial powers.

Philip Pullman said to BBC, “It’s been a constant source of pleasure to me to see this story adapted to different forms and presented in different media. It’s been a radio play, a stage play, a film, an audiobook, a graphic novel–and now comes this version for television. In recent years we’ve seen the way that long stories on television, whether adaptations or original, can reach depths of characterization and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel.”

No cast, production dates, or release dates have been mentioned for the project at the time of this writing. Pullman will be involved with the project as an executive producer along with Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner of Bad Wolf, Toby Emmerich and Carolyn Blackwood of New Line Cinema, Bethan Jones of BBC One and Deborah Forte of Scholastic.
