BATWOMAN Receives New Ongoing Comic Series in 2017

DC’s Rebirth has been an enormous success for the publisher, but if there has been one complaint, it’s that many characters who held their own titles during the New 52 era were given the shaft, while DC leaned on tried and true favorites. One of the characters that wasn’t in the initial Rebirth line-up in her own title was Batwoman, arguably DC’s highest profile LGBT character. Although she had appeared in Detective Comics alongside Batman, fans had been hoping Kate Kane would get her own title again.

Well, come February, Batwoman will indeed be returning to her own ongoing monthly series. Just announced (via The Hollywood Reporter), Batwoman will be brought to us by the creative team of DC Bombshells writer Marguerite Bennett and longtime Marvel artist and illustrator of Image Comics’ Velvet,  Steve Epting. Batwoman’s new series will kick off with a special Rebirth one-shot in February, followed by an all-new Batwoman #1 in March. You can see the cover for the one-shot below.

In a statement, writer Marguerite Bennett said “There has never been a heroine I have loved more than Batwoman. Her flaws, her ferocity, her struggle to rise above her own history and find a way to serve the greater good and those she loves–she’s always cut me straight to the bone. To be a queer woman and to see a queer woman as not just a part but a pillar of the Bat-family was life changing, inspiring and gave me the courage to pursue this career in comics. The opportunity to add to Kate Kane’s story and legacy is both an honor and a sincere dream come true.”

Right before the Batwoman solo title launch, Bennett will team up with writer James Tynion IV for “Batwoman Begins,” a two-issue Detective Comics story arc. Here is that storyline’s official description:

Following the “Night of the Monster Men,: Batwoman and Batman discover that the venom from the defeated monsters’ corpses is being sold as a bioweapon. After Batwoman comes face to face with the villain responsible, Batman gives Batwoman a mission that takes her around the world, creating the backdrop for her new solo series in February, whose first story arc will also be co-written by Bennett and Tynion IV.

More details on Batwoman’s new series is expected to drop this week at New York Comic-Con.
