Battlestar: An Epic of Sci-Fi LULZ?

Oh, China. Don’t ever change. The cracky prism through which you interpret Western pop culture is a beautiful thing (“DO NOT WANT!”), but I have to say… you may have topped yourself this time with your Battlestar Galactica complete series DVD cover art:

Now, I’m a well-documented BSG junkie. And maybe I’m getting less perceptive in my old age, but the “tween comedy” angle of the show was completely lost on me. (Maybe the Kara/Lee/Sam/Dee quadrangle of romantic angst was supposed to be an homage to some Degrassi plotline I was unaware of. I guess that’s… funny?) And twists aplenty in BSG, for sure, but a “SAW-like twist” at the end? I know Roslin’s cancer was pretty straightforward, but was Adama supposed to have cancer too and we just didn’t know it? Did that hit the cutting room floor but ended up in the overseas cut? What the hell is going on here?!

All jokes aside, I really want to see this awesome, epic sci-fi mash-up vision now. The one depicted right there on the cover, with the USS Enterprise and the Stargate making guest appearances. WOW.

Aaron Douglas must be super-stoked at any rate, he gets second billing. They LOVE the Chief in China!

(Thanks, Ericka, for the heads-up!)

not that it’s anything like how ‘the west’ commodifies ‘the east’, eg. how white people tatt themselves with embarrassingly trite chinese characters, eat at sushi places run by koreans and chinese, can’t tell the difference between different chinese ethnicities etc. /dick

    but the cover’s pretty hilarious.

  2. Otto says:

I like how everybody who posted about this failed to notice that THERE’S A STARGATE BEHIND THEM ON THE COVER.

All that’s needed now is to have a couple of guys in the corner battling it out with lightsabers.

  3. Brandon says:

We might not dub them accurately, but we don’t inaccurately put chuck norris on the cover of all their movies.

  4. Paul Eck says:

Strangely the html for strikethrough didn’t work here. I wonder if this will?

  5. Gordon Werner says:

All bootleg DVD movies in China are like this … just as CK said, they just make the box art look like the original using whatever they have lying around.

    the chinese consumers don’t care

  6. ck says:

This is most likely a pirated version which is why the box art is as such. In pirated box art, some guy just mashes together a bunch of different art and steals pieces of text from movie reviews to make it look more legit. I bet if you read the text, it doesn’t even make sense and is about an entirely different movie.

The legit copies of BSG in China are accurate, but not nearly as hilarious.

  7. jk says:

The Stargate is a nice touch.

  8. heather says:

bsg is a tween comedy?! that is awesome. now i will totally watch it. i bet that blond girl in the red dress on the cover was the nerd that got a makeover and became really popular. here’s hoping she doesn’t have a tumor that turns her into a psychopath. nevermind, here’s hoping she does!

thanks for the info china. can’t wait to see your cover art for the complete series of lost!

  9. There are many copies. And they have a plan. A continuing mission to seek out new life and new civilizations. And enslave them with symbiotes.

And a little research shows that “Firefly” is subtly in there as well with references to movies with Summer “River” Glau (“Sleepover,” “a good-hearted ‘tween comedy”*) and Michael “Niska” Fairman (“Dead Silence,” “A Saw-like twist at the end.”**).

*Which is immediately followed by “…hampered by uneven direction and a misguided plot twist” (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/07/09/DDGII7I1PV1.DTL).

**In the parallel universe where Jom Monaghis of the Geiroit Free Press is John Monaghan of the Detroit Free Press (http://www.movieweb.com/news/NEEY7GGLVdAzIK).

  10. Eric says:

A friend got me a Japanese movie (Versus) in Hong Kong that had the credits for Terminator 2 on the back. I was glad to know it was THX ‘Gertified’ for best ‘Sond.’

  11. Danny Damore says:

I’ll take BSG anyway I can get it!

  12. Beautiful, but I can’t imagine our dubbings of their old Kung Fu classics are much more accurate.
