If there is one comic book character whose origin story we never need to see again it’s Batman. At this point everyone in the world is well aware both his mother–Martha–and father were killed in front of him when he was a child. However there is another character connected to Bruce Wayne, who despite playing an integral role in every Caped Crusader movie, we know almost nothing about–his butler/guardian Alfred Pennyworth. But now thanks to this new trailer from Funny or Die we finally have some insight into how he came to be such a loyal servant. And Alfred: Before Batman is a Gotham origin story we would actually care about seeing.
This mock trailer, which we came across at THR, features footage of Michael Caine‘s Alfred from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, along with footage from the 2005 adaptation of Oliver Twist. It tells the tale of a poor English orphan who climbed all the way up in life to serve food and make the bed of some rich Americans.
As the “blurb” from Rotten Tomatoes says, this is “finally a DC movie worth seeing.” Although we are definitely interested in the other two fake movies mentioned here, Martha: A Single Mom Story and Call Me Professor Xavier.
“Because every butler has a beginning,” and it’s much more poignant when it’s told with a sad violin.
