What does a superhero fear? Who does he fear? What does a man that wears a mask fear? A new clip from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have just answered all of those questions.
In the new teaser released for the film, Batman, wearing a stylish but totally unnecessary coat, is tied up in an underground bunker with other captives, when Superman descends down. The armed soldiers standing guard to the tunnel all kneel before him. An angry, smug Superman then walks up to Batman and unmasks him (somehow also managing to pull Batmanâs black eye makeup off too). Superman than gives a sinister sneer at the mask.
Weâve seen footage from this part of the movie before, in the filmâs first trailer. Thereâs a brief shot at the 2:06 mark, but the other point of note is at the 2:39 mark, where we see Batman in this coat fighting with the same soldiers from this clip, but in what appears to be a war-torn desert.
Knowing what we know from that trailer about the film–how Batman resents Superman, and that some consider Superman to be a god, or worse, a false god–this new clip screams dream sequence. Itâs hard to believe Superman could be so full of hate, and the setting (and that damn jacket) feel antiquated and out-of-place. This seems more like a (k)nightmare for Batman. I could certainly be wrong, but the attitude of Superman here doesnât seem to fit. However, this makes a ton of sense as a manifestation of Batmanâs fears: helpless, at the mercy of his opponent, and unmasked.
The official Batman v Superman Twitter account that sent this out said a new trailer for the film will air during Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night, so weâll have a chance to learn a lot more.
The movie opens March 25, 2016.
