Madness Begins in New BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE Trailer

Get ready for the first R-rated animated Batman film. Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke is finally getting adapted for the screen, and with most of the voice cast from the classic Batman: The Animated Series to boot.

Via Yahoo Movies, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has dropped the first trailer for Batman: The Killing Joke, and it features a lot of visual callbacks to the original comic, including Kevin Conroy‘s Batman making a plea to the silent Joker and Barbara Gordon’s moment of fate.

According to the Joker (Mark Hamill), it only takes “one bad day” to drive someone into madness. The Killing Joke unveils a possible origin story for the Joker, but even he isn’t entirely sure if he can trust his memories. Instead, the Joker’s ultimate revenge against Batman strikes at the heart of two of the people that he cares about the most: Barbara Gordon (Tara Strong) and her father, Commissioner James Gordon (Ray Wise).

While this trailer largely plays up the iconic moments from The Killing Joke graphic novel, it does hint at the extended prologue that will focus on Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl. That’s a departure from the comic, which didn’t feature Barbara in costume at all. It’s also possible that this film could introduce Barbara’s second heroic alter ego: Oracle.

Batman: The Killing Joke was produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu. The film will premiere at San Diego Comic-Con International before heading to Digital HD and DVD/Blu-ray in July.
