Scott Snyder’s Next (and Maybe Last) BATMAN Story Is a Post-Apocalyptic Adventure

Since 2011, Scott Snyder has been DC’s primary Batman writer with runs on Detective Comics, Batman, and All-Star Batman. Snyder is currently unleashing seven evil Batmen in the Dark Nights: Metal crossover, but his possible final Batman story will be even wilder than that.

Via CBR, Snyder announced that he and artist Sean Murphy are joining forces for Batman: Last Knight, a story that takes the Dark Knight in some very unexpected directions. At the New York Comic Con Batman panel, Snyder set the stage for Last Knight: “Batman suddenly wakes up and he’s… young, but he wakes up in this post apocalyptic wasteland, crawling out of the sand in this Gotham City that’s been ruined. He’s got the Joker’s head chained to his belt, but it’s alive and like ‘You gotta move, kid!’ It’s got old Wonder Woman, Baby Superman–it’s like my Lone Wolf and Cub Batman story.”

No release date is available yet, but since Murphy is currently working on Batman: White Knight, another alternate reality Batman tale (pictured above), he probably won’t be able to start Batman: Last Night soon. As for Snyder, he told the crowd that former Batman writer, Grant Morrison gave him the advice that led to this series. “[Morrison] said you’ve got to give them a birth and a death. So this isn’t really a death, but this is a closing a chapter in my version of Batman.”

Snyder then went on to say that this will be his last Batman story “for a long time.”
