BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE’s New Trailer Brings Deadly Strangers Together

Drew Goddard made his directorial debut The Cabin in the Woods in 2012, which co-starred Chris Hemsworth before he was cast as Thor. And now this fall, Goddard and Hemsworth are re-teaming for Bad Times At the El Royale, a new period thriller featuring Hemsworth as Billy Lee, a charismatic cult leader. Billy Lee is just one of the seven strangers whose fates will be determined on one fateful night in the ’60s. The newest trailer for the film has dropped, and it has the perfect sentiment for this or any time: “Shit happens, get the whiskey.”

While Hemsworth’s character has a definite presence in the trailer, the bulk of the spotlight falls on Jeff Bridges‘ Father Daniel Flynn, and Cynthia Erivo’s Darlene Sweet. Darlene’s a singer who may be the most innocent person staying at the El Royale. But that alone won’t save her life, so she’s going to have to save herself.

Dakota Johnson’s Emily Summerspring appears to be set directly against Billy Lee, since she’s holding her sister (as played by Cailee Spaeny) hostage to keep her from going back to Billy’s cult. Lewis Pullman is playing the hotel’s concierge, while Jon Hamm rounds out the main players as Laramie Seymour Sullivan. We’re not sure what Laramie’s deal is, but we don’t really buy his cover as a “vacuum cleaner salesman.”

Jim O’Heir, Nick Offerman, Mark O’Brien, and Russell Crowe also appear in the film in undisclosed roles, but we’ll learn more when Bad Times At the El Royale hits theaters on Friday, October 12.
