Back to Work, SHERLOCK: Production on S4 Begins!

Out of the smoke, it appears, like a ghost: the return of BBC One and PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery! is back. Apparently television production is afoot on Sherlock season four, as evidenced by the video co-creator Mark Gatiss posted on Wednesday.

There’s still plenty to get excited about, even with the minimal information provided in the video above. According to the video’s description, for example, “Sherlock will return to screens with three brand-new episodes promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases,” and will find Sherlock back on British soil as “Doctor Watson and his wife Mary prepare for their biggest ever challenge — becoming parents for the first time.”

Something tells us Sherlock is not going to be happy about this loss of attention from the Watson household.

The gist of the season will center on the “ghosts of the past” that “are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman), bringing adventure, romance, and terror in their wake.” But it won’t be anything new, as—according to Steven Moffat and Gatiss—”This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax…”

Elsewhere in the Sherlockiverse, it was recently announced that Rachel Talalay will become the first-ever woman (and an American to boot!) to direct an episode of the series. Talalay is no novice when it comes to Steven Moffat’s work, having previously directed some of the best episodes of last season of Doctor Who, in addition to her other work on shows like The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supernatural.
