BACK TO THE FUTURE Prequel Trailer is a Heavy Look How Doc Got His Plutonium

Everything that happens to Marty McFly in the Back to the Future franchise starts not with Doc Brown showing him the time machine, but with the Libyans. Yes, the same ones that Doc conned out of the plutonium needed to make the whole thing work, gunning down Emmet Brown, causing Marty to flee in the DeLorean, where his adventures in time began.

We know a little about what preceded that fateful night in the mall parking lot from something Doc said. “They wanted me to build them a bomb, so I took their plutonium and, in turn, gave them a shoddy bomb casing full of used pinball machine parts.”

That’s the backstory–a mad scientist defrauds a group of Libyan nationals out of plutonium by making them a fake bomb, so they seek vengeance against him.

Sounds like a pretty good premise for a movie. Don’t believe me? Well, wait until you see this awesome, way more intense than you expect trailer for the Back to the Future prequel you didn’t know you needed until now.

1.21 Gigawatts by Tyler Hopkins is a gritty, serious trailer about a man trying to change the future (and the past) who gets caught up in an international game of cat and mouse. (Try to see how many other films he used to make this trailer.)

Uh, you did not expect that to be so “heavy,” did you? The only real Back to the Future footage was at the very end, where Doc’s line, “They found me. I don’t know how but they found me,” punctuates the real danger of what he did.

So how many other films did you spot? I think I only got four the first time through, but in fairness I was really into the trailer. Hopkins says he used footage from My Favorite Martian, Camp Nowhere, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead, Dennis the Menace, Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, The Sum of All Fears, Syriana, Iron Man, Dazed and Confused, and Munich.

I love everything about this faux-movie, minus the part where I can’t actually see it. Someone should build a time machine and go back in time and actually make it.
