BABY GROOT is Getting His Own Comic Book Series

When Baby Groot danced his way into our hearts at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, it was probably inevitable that he would make his return to the Marvel Universe in another capacity. And while Marvel seemed to be caught of guard by Baby Groot’s popularity after the first film, no one can say that they aren’t ready for it now—which is probably why he’s getting his very own comic!

At the annual ComicsPro meeting, Marvel announced that Baby Groot will star in his own ongoing comic book series starting in May. The title will be called I Am Groot, with writer Christopher Hastings and artist Flaviano working as the creative team. The premise of the book finds Baby Groot separated from the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy in a distant part of the universe.

Marvel also released a brief description of I Am Groot # 1:

“When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!”

Given that the full-sized Groot will likely still be running around in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic, this may be an out of continuity adventure for Baby Groot—but you never know with Marvel. After all, they found a way to bring Old Man Logan into the regular Marvel Universe over a year before Logan.

As for the rest of the Guardians, Marvel also revealed a new standalone miniseries called Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy by artist Alan Davis and writer Jim Starlin, the man who created Drax, Gamora, and Thanos.

Giardians of the Galaxy Mother Entropy

As the name implies, the new five-issue miniseries will pit the Guardians against a new villain named Mother Entropy, with guest appearances by Thanos and Pip the Troll. This is also a standalone story, that was designed to be accessible to casual fans who only know the characters from the movies as well as regular readers of the comics. Both I Am Groot # 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy # 1 will be released in May.
