There are some potentially BIG spoilers ahead for Gotham, even beyond the title of this post. If you arenât up to date with last nightâs episode, you may want to hold off on reading this. Or…you could read our recap of âScarificationâ that leads directly into one of season 2âs major revelations.
Itâs been very clear that the Theo (James Frain) and Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas) have a deeper history with Gotham City and a longstanding grudge against the Wayne family. And while several Batman fans guessed that the Galavans were a precursor to the Court of Owls, their connection stems from another part of Batmanâs extended circle of characters.
In âScarification,â it was revealed that the Galavan family was once known as the Dumas family before the Waynes had them exiled from Gotham City. That gives the Galavans a connection to the Order of St. Dumas, and a way for Gotham to introduce Azrael into the series.
While speaking to ComicBook.com, Gotham executive producer John Stephen said, “We will be going deeper into the Order of St. Dumas over the next run of episodes, and it will continue to play an evolving role for the rest of the season…And yes, we wouldnât be telling an Order of St. Dumas story without also intending to tell an Azrael story. Just keep watching.â
The first comic book incarnation of Azrael in the DC universe was Jean-Paul Valley Jr., a young man who was brainwashed into becoming the champion of the fanatical Order of St. Dumas. Valley became an ally of Bruce Wayne and he even briefly took over the role of Batman during the classic Knightfall storyline. He eventually went insane, which forced Wayne to reclaim the mantle of Batman after recovering from a severe back injury. More recently, a second Azrael named Michael Lane appeared in the DCU, even after the New 52 reboot.
It remains to be seen which version of Azrael will make his live-action debut on Gotham. But it seems like a safe bet that his flaming sword will be making an appearance.
Batman fans, who would you cast as Azrael on Gotham? And which Azrael should be used? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
