AVENGERS’ Scarlett Johansson & Mark Ruffalo on Black Widow/The Hulk’s New Dynamic

Editor’s Note: This video contains potential spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron, so turn back now or prepare to live with the fact that you now possess forbidden, possibly life-altering knowledge. Not really life-altering, but we want to give you fair warning.

With Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the status of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is changing. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are going through their darkest period yet and the fight against Ultron will push them to their limits both as defenders of planet Earth and as people coming to terms with the immense power and responsibility they wield. As they evolve as characters, their interpersonal relationships are changing too, and one of the most fascinating new relationships is the new dynamic seen between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Though they differ radically in terms of power levels, they manage to bond through their mutual outsider status and a pervasive feeling of not fitting into the mold of a “hero.” Is it romantic? Is it platonic? Is it the best new thing about the movie? Rather than wantonly speculate, I sat down with Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo to get their take on the matter.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1, 2015.
