AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Writers Reveal the Origin of ’67 Characters’ Rumor

In just a few weeks, Captain America: Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo are bringing a large selection of Marvel heroes to the big screen. But that’s just a warm up for their next project: the two-part, Avengers: Infinity War which will close out Marvel’s Phase 3 films. Earlier this year, an off-hand comment by the Russos led to the rumor that 67 Marvel characters will be featured in Infinity War. And while those movies could easily eclipse Civil War in terms of characters, there probably won’t be 67 main roles in those films.

During a new interview with The Huffington Post, Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that the origin of the “67 characters” rumor is that it was the number of available MCU players who could potentially appear. And it doesn’t sound like the final total will be anywhere near that high.

“We had our office filled with cards of everybody who was alive and available, and the [Russo] brothers came in and went, ‘Whoa,’ related McFeely. “So that doesn’t mean that everyone is, you know, there’s not going to be 67 lead parts.”

So who will be in Infinity War? It’s simple, really. Because the MCU isn’t actually ending with Infinity War, it needs to be the gateway between Marvel’s Phase 3 and Phase 4. That means the new characters of Phase 3 including Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man should appear in some capacity. All four of those characters have been Avengers in Marvel’s comic book universe, and they are likely to get sequel films in Phase 4. Every MCU Avenger who is still alive will probably appear in Infinity War. So, save spots for Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, and War Machine. If somebody dies between now and then, they may still show up in some capacity.

Given that Ant-Man and the Wasp are getting their own sequel movie, it makes sense to finally bring them into the Avengers. And although the Guardians of the Galaxy are pretty removed from the events on Earth, they really need to be in Infinity War as well. Drax and Gamora are intrinsically tied to Thanos, and it would be a disservice to their stories if they weren’t around for the final battle against their shared nemesis. Would that duo head to Earth without Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, and the newest member, Mantis? We think not.

That’s 23 characters right there. And if Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are coming back as Nick Fury and Maria Hill, then that’s 25 main characters. Should the Winter Soldier show up as well? It’s also likely that the Russo brothers will throw in some surprise character appearances too. After all, we’re overdue to see Adam Warlock in the MCU!
