INFINITY WAR Prelude Comic Reveals What’s Next for Bucky and the Renegade Avengers

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War and the newly released Infinity War Prelude comic. Proceed at your own risk!

At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. the Winter Soldier) voluntarily went into suspended animation under the protection of Black Panther in Wakanda. But as anyone who has seen the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War can attest, Bucky’s not going to miss out on the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe story to date. Now, the first issue of Avengers: Infinity War Prelude comic has shed some light on Bucky’s fate and the next steps for Captain America and his underground Avengers.

Via IGN, the Infinity War Prelude comic not only depicts the scene in which Black Panther/T’Challa offered to help Cap and Bucky, it features T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, as she makes good on that promise. As Shuri explains to T’Challa, she has digitally mapped Bucky’s mind so that she can identify and destroy the effects of Hydra’s brainwashing. Essentially, she’s rebooting Bucky, while ensuring that his personality remains intact.

As for Cap’s Avengers, they have apparently split up. Ant-Man has reunited with his daughter and Hawkeye has returned to his family. Surprisingly, Scarlet Witch and Vision appear to have slipped off together as a couple, while Black Widow has joined Falcon and Captain America in their battle against terrorists who have been stockpiling Chitauri weapons. (Looks like the Vulture wasn’t the only one to repurpose that alien technology.)

Even Iron Man gets a brief spotlight in the issue, as he works on his new armor (as seen in the trailer) while contemplating whether even Cap’s assistance can really help the team deal with their next major threat. Writer Will Corona Pilgrim and artist Tigh Walker covered a lot of ground in Avengers: Infinity War Prelude #1, which is currently available on Marvel’s digital outlets. The second issue of this series will be released on February 28.
