Authentic R2-D2 Unit from STAR WARS Sets Begins Auction at $1 Million

You know those droids you’ve been looking for? Well, the good news is we found one of them. The bad news is that it’s going to cost you–a lot. Because an authentic, complete R2-D2 unit is now on the auction block, and the bidding starts at one million dollars.

The beloved astromech droid being auctioned by Invaluable.com “was put together over many years by sourcing original components and assembling them” from parts used while filming the Original Trilogy as well as Episodes I and II. Despite being reconstructed, Invaluable says what makes this particular R2 so valuable is that “a complete film used R2 unit is not known to be in the public domain,” making this the closest thing to a totally authentic collectible you can buy.

The listing for the auction (which we first learned about at the Boston Globe), says it also features “one of the few hero aluminum domes made for R2 actor Kenny Baker,” and that which they claim to be the only of these that is publicly available. You can read about all of the other great features on this R2 at the auction site’s page listing. While as of this writing there are no bids for the opening million dollar listing, they expect the sale price to go as high as two million.

They do have another amazing Star Wars item up for grabs at a slightly lower price: Luke’s lightsaber from A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (specifically, the non-fighting one Mark Hamill used in the movie). The lightsaber’s initial listing of $150,000 doesn’t have a bid yet either, but it’s expected to go for as much as $250,000.

Both auctions end on June 28th.

These are both amazing pieces of Star Wars memorabilia, but for those of us that aren’t rich we might be better off doing some treasure hunting at the bottom of reactor shafts or doing business with the Jawas.

Which of these items would you most like to get your severed hand on? Tell us in the comments below.
