Australian Radio Station Enlists Reggie Watts, Rick Astley, Lorde, Skrillex For A Comedy Promo

In a Herculean feat of persuasion, popular Australian radio station Triple J coaxed over three dozen musical acts, including a staggering number of global chart-toppers, to participate in a comedy sketch promoting the station’s listener-picked, best of 2014 campaign, “Hottest 100”. The sketch was filmed sporadically throughout the year, during each of the (mostly Australian) artist’s separate in-studio visits, then edited together to appear as though they’ve all been gathered at once for an important meeting.

The nearly six minute sketch begins with Triple J morning hosts, Matt and Alex, presenting the corralled crowd with the task of collectively creating a jingle for “Hottest 100.” The first big reveal of the bit comes quickly, with pop-prodigy Lorde decidedly announcing, “I’m out,” and excusing herself from the huddle. In quick succession, we next see Flight Facilities, Flume, Reggie Watts, and alt-J (aka ∆) provide good-humored, self-deprecating cameos as hosts Matt and Alex desperately attempt to regain control of the room. Cheesy jokes get thrown around, feelings gets hurt and later assuaged, and a pun on “drop the bass” brings Diplo, Skrillex and Steve Aoki into the fold. Ben Folds, The Preatures, Little Dragon, First Aid Kit and Disclosure all make appearances before Rick Astley and Gotye provide a very internet-pleasing blow to the scene.

While maybe not laugh-out-loud funny –unless you’re familiar with the excessive inside jokes being made at each of the musician’s expense–the sketch is still amusing simply for the opportunity to see all these artists show off their comedic chops. For a full list of musicians and when they appear, check out the YouTube description, and keep your eye out for a soon-to-be-released outtakes video.
