Attention Sleepyheads: SLEEPY HOLLOW Is Coming to Comics

The Headless Horseman is escaping the confines of the television screen and coming to haunt you in a different medium: comic books. BOOM! Studios will be releasing a four issue limited series set in the world of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow. Written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by Jorge Coelho with back up stories by Noelle Stevenson, the comic will tell an all-new story featuring the characters you know and love from the television series. Yay for more Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills!

If you haven’t watched Sleepy Hollow yet, you have plenty of time before the comic’s October release to catch up. The series is set in the present day and stars Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane. He’s from the 1700s but wakes up in modern times and partners with Detective Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) to fight against all sorts of creepy monsters. It’s charming, scary, surprisingly funny, and altogether a lot of fun.

You could probably get away with starting with the comic, too. Since the limited series stars familiar characters in a fresh story, it’s a fine way to dive in. Writer Marguerite Bennett became a fan of the series at San Diego Comic-Con last year, and her enthusiasm for the material means she’s in comfortable territory. She recently spoke with Comic Book Resources about the series, and I was pleased to learn she enjoys the relationships between the characters as much as I do: “The relationships on the show move me as much as — and even more — than the perilous adventures and rich mythos.”

Besides Ichabod and Abbie, fans will see Jenny, Frank, Henry, Luke, and Andy playing pivotal roles in the comics. As far as the story format, Bennett says, “The first two comics are each standalone, self-contained single issues, while the third and fourth will be our two-part finale, so to speak. The first issue takes place early in the season and is a story of magic, the second is in the middle and is a story of myth, and the third and fourth are close to the end, and are the story of a machine.”
