If John Wick and its equally-awesome sequel have given us one thing, it’s that its now cool for Hollywood directors to use continuous, technically precise shots in their action sequences. But hey, why should dudes like Keanu Reeves get to have all the fun? Isn’t it time for a female protagonist to get in on that sweet sweet tactical reloading action?
That’s the drive behind Atomic Blonde, which is being co-directed by John Wick‘s David Leitch â and, judging by this newly released “restricted” trailer, is going to be ridiculous. Seriously, every time I think I’m going to get tired of the dramatic song cover trope in movie trailers, I hear something like this version of “Blue Monday” and get hype all over again. To say nothing of all the awesome action sequences and James Bond-style spy shenanigans that Charlize Theron seems like she gets to to do in this movie!
Based on a 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, the film stars Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 assassin who must navigate her way through Berlin to take down an espionage ring; It also features Sofia Boutella, Toby Jones, John Goodman, and a nearly unrecognizable James McAvoy (Seriously, I had to look up who it was when I watched), as well as a script by 300 writer Kurt Johnstad.
Atomic Blonde set to premiere at South by Southwest this weekend before its released later this summer, so I guess we’ll hear more about it soon! In the meantime, are you looking forward to checking it out? Let us know in the comments!
