THE WEST WING’s Allison Janney Took Charge One More Time

Television watchers may be sick and tired of political coverage today, but fans of The West Wing cried out in excitement yesterday when Allison Janney, aka CJ Cregg, appeared behind the press secretary’s podium at the White House yesterday afternoon. You can catch the fun video here, straight from the official Twitter account of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

For seven seasons, we were lucky enough to have Janney as everyone’s favorite fictional president’s press secretary, and later his Chief of Staff. The show has been over for years now, but the fondness that the cast members have for their former roles has remained clear, as they have all stunt performed as their alter egos at events and in PSAs for causes they hold dear.

Washington is teeming with celebrities this weekend, all attending the White House Correspondents Dinner this evening to laugh, pose, and generally make merry at the hottest event in town. They even call it Nerd Prom, and you can bet that if you have a friend who works in politics they cannot wait to see the fashion and pore over the jokes made by tonight’s host, Larry Wilmore.

For fans of The West Wing, seeing Janney back behind her character’s podium was a delight, and listening to her sprinkle her appearance with show references just made us chuckle harder. It was clear that the President’s actual press secretary, Josh Earnest, was in on the joke, as he ribbed her gently for stealing his show once he miraculously recovered from his root canal and entered stage left. If you’re feeling the need for a little rewatch for nostalgia’s sake, definitely check out season 1’s “Six Meetings Before Lunch” to see her performance of “The Jackal” and “Celestial Navigation” to catch the Josh Lyman’s infamous briefing of the press while CJ is out with a root canal herself. You can catch them all streaming on Netflix.
