ASSASSIN’S CREED and SPLINTER CELL Sequel Movies May Be Coming

Later this year, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed video game franchise is leaping to the big screen with Michael Fassbender in the leading role. And while it’s far too soon to predict how the Assassin’s Creed film will perform, a sequel may already be coming.

New Regency is reportedly interested in turning Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell into movie franchises. The story originated at Variety, which featured a quote from Daphne Yang, the CEO of Catchplay, the Taiwanese company that co-financed both films.

“They are both adaptations of successful Ubisoft games and would make ideal sequels,” said Yang. Nerdist has reached out to New Regency for comment and confirmation, but we have not yet heard back as of press time.

The Splinter Cell movie isn’t as far along as Assassin’s Creed, but Tom Hardy is attached to headline the adaptation with Doug Liman as the director. Splinter Cell is tentatively set for a 2017 release, but it does not have a date yet.

While both Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell are popular gaming franchises, there’s no guarantee that either film will become a box office hit. It’s become commonplace for movie studios to begin planning the sequel before the first movie even hits theaters, especially when the movie is based on a preexisting property. Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell have more than enough narrative to support multiple films, but it will almost always depend upon whether the films can find an audience. If movie fans embrace these adaptations, then the road to getting the sequels made will become a lot easier.

Assassin’s Creed is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21.
