Art Snob: Odd City’s “Secret of NIMH”

ART SNOB LOGO

You may remember Odd City Entertainment, a poster company based out of the capital of cool, Austin, Texas, and if you don’t know them, you should. They burst onto the scene with their fantastic Pacific Rim series (covered by myself here and here), and quickly showed the art buying public why they were a company with which to get familiar.

Giant robots not your thing? A. I’m sorry. B. How about tiny mice on magical quests?

Say the word NIMH to any animation fan or child of the early ’80s, and you’ll most likely get a goofy smile from ear to ear. The Secret of NIMH, directed by the legendary Don Bluth, is one of my favorite childhood films (and hopefully, one of yours), and Odd City/poster artist Mark Loan is giving this beloved piece of nostalgia the artistic treatment, with a fantastic limited edition print.

Mark Loan said, “Being a fan of 80’s animation, I must admit, I wore out my VHS tape of The Secret of NIMH, my favorite Don Bluth movie. I learned so much during the process of making this piece while studying as much as I could from the movie concept sketches and character designs (some even by Don himself). I realized after starting this print that I have always drawn owls (and I have drawn a few of owls) very dark and ominous, much like ‘the great owl’… it was at that point I recognized how much this movie had impacted my artistic style subconsciously, even when I was a kid. So thank you to everyone involved with the making of such a great movie.”

MLONE - SECRET OF NIMHThe poster will have a very limited run of 140 pieces, and features 10 colors and 3 metallic inks.

The piece will drop on August 8th at a random time, so be sure to follow Odd City on twitter and check out their website for more art!

Loving this print? Big fan of NIMH? What childhood fave would you like to see get the poster treatment?

  1. If your body is not in pain you will not be spending the time
complaining about it, you will geet more one and you’ll feel better.
This can lead to the numbness and tingling of MS
that you keep dismissing as nothing to worry about.
Numbness of the skin of the lips, cheek, and tongue is a well
recognized and unpredictable side effect of
nearly any Oral Surgery procedures but it is especially associated with the removal
of lower wisdom teeth and other surgical procedures
at the back of your lower jaw and with surgical procedures on your lips.

this fine piece of art was so popular that Odd City Entertainment sold out of them faster then pepto bismol’s pink fluid cures diarrhea (look – shit humor used as a metaphor for “you’re shit out of luck if you didn’t order this print when it was 1st available”!)
