Art Meets Science in This Amazing Ferrofluid Skull Magnet

Mesplé started blacksmithing at the age of 11, and went on to work in a foundry before achieving his Master of Science in Arts, Computation and Engineering at UCLA. Since then, he’s been combining art with technology, influenced by the desire to make art more of an interactive and engaging experience.

His latest offering does just that; it’s a Skull Magnet that interacts with a mass of ferrofluid beneath. Ferrofluid is a liquid infused with metal particles that react in the presence of a magnetic field. It was invented in 1963 by NASA scientist Steve Papell as a potential liquid rocket fuel. Pretty cool, right?

As you can see, the skull looks like it’s sucking up the liquid for a quick meal–it’s morbidly beautiful. Mesplé states, via his website, that the focus for his art is “not to display the complexity behind his creations, but rather have more visually simple, even minimalist, work that fascinates, while maintaining his aesthetic.” You can really feel that drive to achieve intriguing minimalism here, and it shows an incredible amount of creativity and vision.

In addition to creating large-scale sculptures for established artists, Mesplé is in high demand for projects in the medical, energy, transportation and military fields. His clients include Google, Red Bull, MGM Grand Hotel, Lincoln Park Zoo, and more. Check out Mesplé’s Facebook page to see some of his tests and early demonstrations of other projects.

What do you think of this ferrofluid skull magnet? Would you like it as a house ornament? We would. Give it some love in the comments below.
