ARROW’S Stephen Amell and John Barrowman Sing a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Duet

When the producers of Arrow said that the show was going to have a lighter tone in the fourth season, this probably isn’t what they expected! During an appearance at this weekend’s Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in Secaucus, New Jersey, Arrow stars Stephen Amell and John Barrowman surprised the crowd with an impromptu musical duet. And while no one should be shocked by Barrowman’s vocal talents, Amell proved that he’s pretty good too!

As Arrow fans should know, Amell plays Green Arrow a.k.a. Oliver Queen on the series, while Barrowman portrays Malcolm Merlyn a.k.a. the Dark Arrow, Oliver’s nemesis turned uneasy ally. Merlyn is also the new Ra’s al Ghul, but that would take way too long to explain. The short version is that even in the extremely unlikely event that Arrow ever puts on a musical episode, the following scene will never happen in Star City!

The song chosen by Amell and Barrowman was “Music of the Night” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 rock musical, The Phantom of the Opera. Charles Hart wrote the lyrics for “Music of the Night,” and it’s one of the most famous songs from Phantom. Given the long-standing animosity between Oliver and Malcolm, it’s kind of inherently hilarious to see their portrayers perform a song about the Phantom’s musical seduction of his would-be lover, Christine Daaé.

For comparison’s sake, here’s the version of “Music of the Night” from the 2004 Phantom of the Opera film with Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Shameless star Emmy Rossum as Christine.

What did you think about Amell and Barrowman’s version of “Music of the Night?” Would you watch an Arrow musical episode? Strike the right notes in the comment section below or else you have failed this city!
