ARROW is Going Full DARK KNIGHT RETURNS in LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

Last week, Stephen Amell guest starred in the pilot episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but fans already know he’ll be back on the series in just a few weeks. However, the Oliver Queen that shows up won’t be the same one whom Arrow fans have watched for the last four seasons. This time, Amell’s Oliver Queen is going to be—spoiler alert! Turn away now if you hate knowing things—missing an arm and sporting the character’s signature goatee as a much older man.

Yup, he’s coming at us from the future! (Hey: these are the Legends of Tomorrow after all.) Green Arrow’s appearance in this iteration was inspired by Frank Miller’s classic miniseries The Dark Knight Returns, which also featured an older Oliver Queen who blamed Superman for the loss of his left arm. Amell had previously stated that his version of Oliver Queen would never have the goatee on Arrow, but he obviously relented for this episode.

For reference, here’s a photo from the animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns:

“Every once in a while, we do an episode where the 10-year-old me has to pinch himself,” explained executive producer and co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim while speaking with ComicBook.com. “As an added bonus to comic book fans, Oliver is missing his left arm and will be sporting a goatee, in a nod to the character’s appearance in the seminal Dark Knight Returns. We think this episode features some of the coolest things we’ve.”

Rip Hunter’s team will encounter Oliver in 2046, well over a century before Vandal Savage conquers the Earth in Hunter’s timeline. Oliver won’t be alone either, as the episode will feature the debut of Connor Hawke, the second Green Arrow from DC’s comic book universe. It’s unclear if this version of Connor Hawke will also be Oliver’s son (as he was in the comics).

Green Arrow and Connor Hawke will be appearing in the sixth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
