ARRIVAL Screenwriter Joins Valiant Comics for SECRET WEAPONS

Valiant Comics announced via Vulture today that Eric Heisserer – the Oscar nominated screenwriter of this year’s sleep hit Arrival – would be jumping into their superhero universe to writer a mini-series called Secret Weapons. This series launches this June and fans of Valiant’s books know that these mini-series are were the company’s best work happens.

Heisserer alone is enough to get us excited, but the fact that artist Raul Allen (Wrath of the Eternal Warrior) makes us even more fired up. The story will follow Livewire, a character that has played an important part in the Valiant Universe since its relaunch a few short years ago. “Much like Faith before her, Livewire is a comics icon in the making. She is beloved by fans and adored by creators,” Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani said in a press release. “Finding the right stage for her to shine has been a top priority at Valiant for some time now and, with Secret Weapons, Eric and Raul have crafted something truly special.” It’s true that Livewire has been around for the company’s biggest and best stories and events, but she hasn’t really broken out in the way characters like Faith and Ninjak have. Secret Weapons could certainly change that.

Secret Weapons has roots in the beginning of the Valiant relaunch, back when Toyo Harada was assembling psiots in the Harbinger series. If you missed that book, think of Harada as a Magneto like figure, a guy assembling what he believes is the next step in evolution in our to rule the lowly “normal” humans below him. In Secret Weapons, Livewire will discover the psiots that Harada found who had powers that were deemed, for lack of a better word, worthless. A young girl who can talk to bird, a boy who can make inanimate objects gently glow, characters who aren’t shooting lightning out of their hands or making stuff blow up with their minds.

We’re stoked on this announcement and can’t wait to see what Eric Heisserer, Raul Allen, and colorist Patricia Martin are cooking up. There are some preview pages below and they look gorgeous. We love Valiant and we loved Arrival, so this is a match made in heaven.
