Aronofsky to Bring MADDADDAM Book Trilogy to HBO

Noah director Darren Aronofsky is headed to HBO, and he’s bringing writer Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy of novels with him.

Deadline reports that the director will executive produce a dramatic series based on the novels with his company Protozoa Pictures, with Aronofsky possibly directing and Atwood serving as a consulting producer.

The three books – Oryx and Crake (2003), Year Of The Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013), trace the arc of the mid-21st century where corporate interests have completely taken over the world while freaky genetically modified organisms make everyday life look like a Cronenberg film. Probably eXistenZ.

If you’re wondering what attracted the filmmaker to the material, it might be that he’s a little flood-happy: a cataclysmic “Waterless Flood” divides the narrative, as we follow the survivors of the global calamity as well as the people responsible for it.

Here’s the Amazon synopsis for the first book:

Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride.”

Atwood is an old hand at great, Hollywood-ready speculative fiction, with her novels The Handmaid’s Tale, Payback, and The Robber Bride making the leap to features (the last one on TV). The Haidmaid’s Tale in particular, was a particularly striking story set in a world where a virus has curbed women’s fertility, and underprivileged women who can conceive are placed in sexual slavery for an ultra-conservative regime.
