Archie Comics Series, RIVERDALE, Gets Full Season Order at The CW

Supergirl isn’t the only comic book inspired show hitting The CW next fall: the network also picked up the long-in-the-works Riverdale with a full series order. Hooray!

As envisioned by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale is said to feature a more subversive take on the classic Archie Comics characters while exploring “small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.” Some of the changes include a “pumped up” Archie (K.J. Apa), a Betty (Lili Reinhart) who loves Adderall a little bit too much, and an emo heartthrob Jughead (Cole Sprouse). But as long as Jughead loves food more than anything else then he’ll be pretty close to his comic book incarnation.

Camila Mendes will play Betty’s eternal frenemy Veronica, while Ross Butler has been cast as Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle. Riverdale will also be featuring Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, a more recent Archie character who is openly gay, as well as Josie and the Pussycats, as played by Ashleigh Murray, Irie Hayleau, and Ashanti Bromfield. And of course, Riverdale also has former teen icon, Luke Perry on board to play Archie’s father, Fred.

Riverdale is being executive produced by Greg Berlanti, a very busy man who now has five different shows on The CW! While a crossover between Riverdale and Bertlanti’s Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow isn’t likely, we say go for it! There’s no better way to show how crazy this new incarnation of Archie is than by letting Riverdale’s characters interact with the DC superheroes. If Archie and The Punisher can meet (and they have), then The CW should make this insane story happen!
