APOSTLE Gets Gruesome in First Trailer

You know Gareth Evans as the director of hard-hitting Indonesian martial-arts movies like Merantau and the two installments of The Raid. But in his newest feature, the director returns to his Welsh roots with Apostle, a creepy tale of cults. Looking like a less campy version of The Wicker Man (either version), Apostle has now revealed its trailer, and, well, it’s bloody. Possibly NSFW.

Dan Stevens—he of LegionThe Guest, and Beauty and the Beast—looks to be dealing with some all-new curses as he tries to save his sister on an a island run by a charismatic religious movement cult. Naturally, it’s fronted by Michael Sheen, who is no stranger to being a dangerous leader of supernatural acolytes onscreen.

We can literally now say, can’t we, that this is a movie that will screw with people’s heads? Because of the corkscrew device, and the…never mind. You get it. Described as “a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it,” Apostle will premiere at Fantastic Fest before landing on Netflix October 12. While the characters probably won’t beat each other with sticks as much as in Evans’ other movies, it does nonetheless appear that sticks will still be used to violent ends.

Evans previously proved he had horror chops in a segment for V/H/S 2, and we’re looking forward to seeing him take them further. Are you excited to see him try something like this? Let us know in comments below.
