APOCALYPSE WARS Crossover Will Bring Marvel’s X-MEN Back Together in 2016

Next year, Oscar Isaac will portray the title character in X-Men: Apocalypse. And apparently, Marvel Comics isn’t going to pass up the chance for a little synergy between Fox’s movies and its recently relaunched X-Men titles.

Earlier today at Brazil’s Comic Con Experience, Marvel talent manager Rickey Purdin revealed the X-Men: Apocalypse Wars crossover that will bring together the three core X-Men books: Extraordinary X-Men, All-New X-Men, and Uncanny X-Men. Presumably, the creative teams currently in place on each title will remain through the crossover.

Further details about the Apocalypse Wars crossover have not yet been revealed. But it’s likely to launch in early spring 2016 to take advantage of the publicity for X-Men: Apocalypse.

Apocalypse has been menacing Marvel’s mutants since he was created in 1986 by writer Louise Simonson and artist Butch Guice. Apocalypse’s real name is En Sabah Nur, and he may be one of the very first mutants in the Marvel Universe. Apocalypse was born in ancient Egypt and he is seemingly immortal. Apocalypse is also a firm believer in “the survival of the fittest” creed, which he has used as a justification to slaughter anyone whom he deems to be weak.

Here’s where things get complicated. The “real” Apocalypse hasn’t appeared in the present day X-Men titles since 2006. At the end of the “Blood of Apocalypse” storyline, Apocalypse was resurrected and spirited away…possibly by the Celestials. An attempt to clone Apocalypse eventually led to Evan Sabahnur a.k.a. Genesis. During the 2014 Axis crossover, Evan was transformed into a near exact replica of Apocalypse, but he reverted to his original form and personality by the end of the story. A future version of Apocalypse appeared in 2009’s Messiah War crossover, in addition to Apocalypse’s cameo appearance in Brian Michael Bendis’ Avengers run in 2010. Bendis used an alternate future Apocalypse, who had Scarlet Witch and Wolverine under his control as his new Horsemen.

There are also some dangling plotlines from Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers run, which introduced the Apocalypse twins, the children of Archangel who claimed the title of Apocalypse for themselves as they assumed control his followers, the Clan Akkaba. The new X-Men: Apocalypse Wars crossover seems like a good opportunity to bring back these seemingly forgotten plotlines for a new story.
