ANT-MAN Director Peyton Reed Reveals Film’s Original Ending

There are BIG SPOILERS ahead for the ending of Ant-Man and for the way things were originally going to play out. If you haven’t seen Ant-Man yet, this is your last chance to turn back!

Although the two end credits scenes in Ant-Man hint at big things to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actual film closes on an extended joke as Luis (Michael Pena) tells Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) that the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is trying to find him. But if director Peyton Reed had stayed with the first ending for Ant-Man, there would have been one more action scene.

The original ending was set up by the opening of the movie. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Mitchell Carson (Martin Donovan) tried to steal the research of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and he got decked by Pym for making a crack about Pym’s wife. Ant-Man originally ended with Lang also getting in a few punches on Carson while recovering the stolen Cross particles from the man who was revealed to be working for Hydra.

“At the end of the movie [Carson] gets away and has these Cross particles,” said Reed. “And there was a sequence where Ant-Man has an encounter with him. But then for a couple reasons, it felt like maybe we should leave those particles out there. In that original thing, he took Martin Donovan out and got the particles.”

That’s a big dangling thread from the film, and no one seems quite sure when or if it will be followed up on. There is no Ant-Man sequel currently on Marvel’s release schedule, and it’s unclear if Ant-Man’s box office performance was big enough to encourage Marvel to go ahead with a follow-up.

The only thing we know for sure is that Rudd will reprise his role as Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War, on May 6th, 2016.

Marvel fans, should Reed have stayed with the original Ant-Man ending? Shrink down and share your opinions in the comment section below!
