ANOTHER METROID 2 REMAKE Marks 30th Anniversary of METROID

Update: Looks like the download link has been removed due to a DCMA takedown request! The creators of the game are looking into it but in the meantime, you can check out how it looks in the video above!

Previously: This weekend was the 30th anniversary of Metroid‘s debut in Japan, which introduced gamers to Samus Aran, one of the very first female heroines to star in her own video game. Nintendo may not have special plans for Samus’ milestone, but the fans certainly do!

Via Kotaku, a fan-made remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus has been released for Windows after six years of development. The original Metroid II was a black and white game on the original Game Boy that has often been overshadowed by its SNES followup, Super Metroid. The amusingly retitled Another Metroid 2 Remake reimagines the entire game with elements from both Super Metroid and the Game Boy Advance title Metroid: Zero Mission. Along the way, AM2R includes revamped enemy AI, a remastered soundtrack, new maps and minibosses, as well as completely redrawn sprites and backgrounds.

On YouTube, Gustavo Moreno posted a video of the first few minutes of AM2R including the game’s opening, and it looks glorious. It’s everything that we could have hoped for in a Metroid II remake.

The team behind this release promises that a Linux build will be available soon, and the official page notes that this is just the first version of AM2R, with more upgrades to come later.
