ANNIHILATION Cast Explains Terrifying “Shimmer” in New Featurette

If you’ve seen any of the amazing, mysterious trailers for Ex-Machina director Alex Garland’s adaptation of the novel Annihilation, it’s not hard to understand why the horror/sci-fi film is one of our most anticipated movies of 2018. It not only has an amazing cast and looks absolutely stunning, the fact that we aren’t completely sure what is really going on totally freaks us out. But if you thought it was scary not knowing about the strange “Shimmer” that is turning the world into some bizarre new place full of horrible monsters, hearing about what is happening inside it from the cast only makes it more terrifying.

In this new featurette from Paramount, that we first came across at io9, stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny talk about the mutations and horrors taking place inside the “The Shimmer,” the unexplained phenomenon that has claimed the lives of almost everyone else who has entered it before them. Because for every gorgeous new animal or flower that it contains, there’s something far more insidious lurking close by.

“I definitely think Annihilation is something we haven’t seen quite yet,” said Rodriguez, and we agree. Especially because every time we get new footage from the film the things inside “The Shimmer” seem more bizarre and awful, like if all of evolution took place in a couple of months instead of millions of years.

And if that’s the case, all that shimmers certainly won’t be gold.

Annihilations, which is an adaptation of author Jeff VanderMeer’s first novel in his Southern Reach Trilogy, also stars Oscar Isaac and comes to theaters on February 23rd.
