Anne Hathaway and Jimmy Fallon Put a Broadway Spin On Rap Songs

Jimmy Fallon’s brought a lot of personality to The Tonight Show, and the musical additions are my favorite. You never know what you’ll see, and to demonstrate that point, Fallon and guest Anne Hathaway teamed up last night for a Broadway style duet. They didn’t sing classic tunes like “Memory” or “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” though, they reinvented rap songs. Snoop Dogg has never sounded so smooth.

Hathaway and Fallon are ridiculously endearing and talented as they go through the medley. She has an amazing singing voice, and he tries to keep up with his fake piano playing (a member of the in house band pressed the keys). They tear through Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice,” 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.” Hathaway owned the last song, as she belted the chorus and climbed on top of the piano. It all has a lounge singer vibe, reminscent of Richard Cheese.

Late night television wins again. Let us know your thoughts on the performance in the comments.

Despite my appreciation of your essay on creativity and originality, I think you’re missing the point of people’s complaints. When it gets down to it, nobody would care that Jimmy’s ripping off Richard Cheese if he was doing it as well as or better than the original. Yes, everything is influenced by prior works, but the new stuff only carries merit if it improves on the original in some way, or introduces something fresh and new to the concept. Otherwise it’s a cheap knockoff, and what’s the point.
Bear in mind, tastes are subjective, so where one person will find this bit musically repetitive and needlessly hammy, another person will focus on Anne’s vocal calisthenics and the bits of visual theatrics that made it amusing. To each their own.

I think Anne was great. Not only was it funny but her voice was incredible. Everyone is so upset about them ripping this off from someone else, we’ll I have news for you, pretty much everything, music, tv, movies, books was influenced off something else… Rock music completely ripped off jazz( Elvis, led Zeppelin, etc), Harry potter is extremely similar to Star Wars. The entire young adult section at the book store is ripped books ripped off of hunger games or divergent, half of comedy shows right now( parks and rec, workaholics, and all the other workplace based shows) ripped off the office, the Simpsons led to family guy and American dad and bobs burgers and other shows like it. Comedians rip off people ALL the time. I hate when people bitch about people not being original when NOTHING is original anymore. They took an idea and made it their own and they did a damn good job at it and they should get the respect they deserve not a hunch of people bitching because I have more news for you, you’re not original either. Nobody is. Not completely anyway. I value being your own person but nobody is 100% original, it’s impossible

Thank you for referencing Richard Cheese. The man’s terrific and his band’s top notch. This was great, but all I could think during it was “Richard Cheese” did it better. 😛

So Jimmy’s ripping off Richard Cheese now? Thanks for 4 more unfunny minutes, Jimmy. You continue to suck…can’t believe NBC prefers this to Conan.
