While the lightsabers made of paper towel rolls and my imagination may not have been the height of technology in 1989, they were pretty awesome weapons in the galactic neighborhood. At the time, my whole Star Wars awareness was limited to Return of the Jedi and the lightsaber Luke Skywalker used to take down Vader. In the years since, I would like to say that I learned a lot about these majestic plasma swords, but to be honest, my knowledge stayed pretty limited to the corner of the expanded universe that I knew.
Not anymore!
The beautiful and detailed infographic below contains descriptions and illustrations of all the lightsabers from the expansive Star Wars galaxy (you’re going to be scrolling for a while, so prepare yourself). Each color category displays the collection of lightsabers that we’ve seen in films, video games and comic books with first appearance notes, handlers, and interesting facts like where the lightsaber came from and why it appears as a specific color both in the stories and on the infographic.
You can see from the detailed drawings that the hilts Jedi constructed were varied and beautiful. As the infographic explains, a deleted scene in Return of the Jedi shows Luke finishing the construction of his green lightsaber, and other corners of Star Wars canon have described the process a Jedi must go through to construct one in detail. If you’re not familiar, one fascinating description is chronicled in the now discontinued Young Jedi Knights book Lightsabers.
Take a few minutes and give this infographic a gander. It’s extensive and full of facts. Then sit back, relax, and imagine the lightsaber you’d have if you were a Jedi.
