AMERICAN HORROR STORY Will Have a Crossover Season, Blending MURDER HOUSE and COVEN

Although producer Ryan Murphy has stated explicitly in the recent past that all the various seasons of the FX anthology series  American Horror Story are somehow connected, it’s only been recently that those connections have become evident. On last year’s Hotel, the character of Queenie from Coven (played by Gabourey Sidibe) checked into the Hotel Cortez (and didn’t check out), and there was also a visit that season to the “Murder House” from year one. And this year on My Roanoke Nightmare, we’ve been introduced to two characters with familial relations to previous characters from both Freak Show and Coven.

But fans can look forward to a much bigger crossover coming down the road. During a Q&A with Ryan Murphy at Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest this weekend, Murphy was asked about comments he made earlier in the year about American Horror Story possibly resurrecting some of the concepts and characters from the Coven season, which was set in New Orleans and all about witches. And in just what way could the Coven characters and themes be coming back?

Murphy revealed to the crowd at the panel “we do know what we’re going to do. It’s not going to be next season, but we are going to do a season that’s a crossover between Murder House and Coven together, which is very bizarre.” So it’s not season seven, which as far as we know, is set to come out in the fall of 2017; therefore, it’s at least as far down the road as season eight in 2018, if not later.

Whenever it is coming, Murphy is played this one close to the chest, although he said “There will be characters from Murder House and characters from Coven together. I’ve [already] started going to actors from both of the seasons, quietly, saying, ‘I think in this window, if you could fit us in.’ So yeah, it’s fun. It’s weird.”

If somehow Murphy entices Jessica Lange to return in as both Constance from Murder House and the Supreme witch from Coven, now that might be worth the wait. Other cool possibilities of a crossover season might be the return of Lady Gaga’s character for this season, who has been revealed as the founder of the covens in America, and whom we see  in the Coven season. Could she be connected to the events of Murder House as well?

Speaking of Murder House, It will be interesting if the series can lure back actress Connie Britton, who only appeared on AHS for that first season, and Dylan McDermott, who played her husband in season one and only had a small role in Asylum later. These two were the original stars of the show as married couple Vivien and Ben Harmon, but haven’t really been recurring participants like so many other actors on this series. Could this be their big return? And could we also have actors playing double roles? Sarah Paulson already did this in Hotel, so it wouldn’t be a first for the series.

What do you think of a crossover season of AHS? Do you think this is out of left field, or has the show been building up to this for some time? Let us know in the comments below.
