Warning: This post contains spoilers for American Horror Story: Roanoke. Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched yet.
We’ve finally reached the penultimate episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke, and boy has it been a ride. Soaked with secrecy, the sixth season has taken viewers through the wringer. For the first five episodes, it took the form of a docudrama. Halfway through, the show runners switched it up and threw the re-enactors and the characters (and ghosts) they played into a reality television show. Now that everyone is dead except for Lee, the show is ready to take one last pivot for the finale. At this point, it’s hard to guess what’s going to happen, so it’s time to dissect this week’s episode and look for clues.
With only one episode left, it was about time we finally saw the highly anticipated appearence of another AHS vet, Taissa Farmiga (Murder House, Coven). In what isn’t exactly the most creative subplot, she plays Sophie, a My Roanoke Nightmare fan who, along with her two pals, is on a mission to get a great Instagram shot of the real-life setting of the show during a blood moon. So like the updated Blair Witch, the trio strapped HD Hero cameras to their helmets and wound up finding something they weren’t expecting: a dead body and confirmation that everything they saw on the show was true. Too bad the cops didn’t believe them and threatened to arrest them for trespassing if they returned… which they definitely did.
Meanwhile, Audrey and Lee were dealing with the surprise reveal from last week: Dylan (who played the Butcher’s son, Ambrose) has returned. As expected, the reason he showed up at the door wearing the pig mask, was because Sid hired him (pre-death) to shake things up a few days in. After showing him that “everyone is dead,” Audrey and Lee explained that Monet was still out there, and that the best way to get away from the house was to return to the Polk farm and steal one of their cars. They also intended to steal the tape that, you know, showed them murdering people.
Once they arrived to the Polk place, the trio split up. Dylan was on vehicle duty, while the other two looked for Monet and the tapes. After running into one of the Polk sons, Lee shot him in the face and took off. Dylan also came upon another son and was stabbed by him, while Audrey finally located Monet. After reuniting, Monet and Audrey headed back to the house for “safety.” They shared a few drinks and settled in to watch the tapes that they’d found. In a matter of minutes they learned the truth of Mason’s murder. During the sequence, we saw flashes of what was happening for Lee. Scathach showed up and worked her dark magic, somehow transferring The Butcher’s dark soul into Lee. Yeah, not good.
While all of this was going on, Sophie and her companions returned to catch more footage and bank on the 20k followers they just gained for their previous trip to the house. On a side note, you ever follow a ghost to its dead body, maybe it’s best you don’t return to see what else happens, yeah? Yeah. Seeing as this is a horror show, the characters don’t have the best judgment. After being on the property for less than 10Â minutes, a Butcher-possessed Lee came out of nowhere and cut one of Sophie’s friends down. In fear for their lives, the pair ran to Sid’s trailer and shut themselves inside.
After seeing the nightmarish scenes happening all over the property, Sophie couldn’t believe her eyes. Everyone but Audrey, Monet and Lee were dead. They spurred into action when they saw a crazed Lee approaching the house. Not wanting her favorite celebrities to be murdered, Sophie suggested that they head back to the house and stop Lee. Her reluctant partner went along with the plan and soon they were back at the house where things were getting real.
Inside the house, Lee found Audrey and Monet terrified and alone. After spewing some Butcher lingo, possessed Lee threw Monet over the balcony where she was impaled down below. Audrey then booked it out of the house in the direction of the bunker/cellar. As she was descending the ladder, Lee caught up and cleaved her shoulder with a butcher knife. The last we saw of her, she was tumbling down into the dark room where she was knocked out on the way down. Lee then set her sights on the two kids and had the Roanoke colony hoist them up and burn them at the stake.
When the cops arrived in the morning (after being called by Sophie beforehand) they found everyone’s dead body … except, of course, for Lee, who was very much still alive. Oh, and Audrey apparently made it through the night–though she didn’t live very long during the day. Upon seeing Lee, Audrey aimed a gun at her with the intention to kill him. The tables turned on her when the cops peppered her with bullets. Lee is the last one standing, as we expected.
