AMERICAN GODS’ Zorya Vechernyaya Teaches Us About Family in New Clip

“Family is who you survive with when you need to survive — even if you don’t like them.”

The idea of family and survival play a huge part in the story of American Gods—even if it doesn’t seem that way at first. The idea of what makes a family, be they chosen or inherited, is certainly nothing new, but looking at how it plays into the fabric of America, the stories of immigrants, and the power of belief definitely feels fresh and vital in the hands of Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. And no one group embodies that more in the series than the unlikely family made up of the Zorya Sisters and Czernobog of Slavic mythology: just ask Zorya Vechernyaya herself (a.k.a. the indomitable Cloris Leachman).

In a new clip from Sunday’s forthcoming episode, Vechernyaya extols to our hero Shadow Moon the virtues of sticking with the family with which you survive the hard times. She and her sisters, you’ll come to learn, are Old Gods struggling to survive in a world gone gaga for the shiny and new. Even though their lives used to be glittering and golden, they usher on still, even as belief wanes.

Though adverse to learning new things herself, we can all agree her mentality is a thoughtful lesson we could all stand to learn about survival and living together in spite of our differences.
