We Know How AMERICAN GODS Will Go Beyond Neil Gaiman’s Book (Exclusive)

There are few things in TVland we’re more excited about than Starz’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s fantasy novel, American Gods. What’s not to love about a Bryan Fuller-produced show that features an incredibly divine cast including Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Crispin Glover, Gillian Anderson, Orlando Jones, Kristin Chenoweth, and Jeremy Davies?! Fuller’s got a plan in place to go far beyond Gaiman’s original story, and today’s Nerdist News has the scoop!

Join host and goddess of Nerdist News, Jessica Chobot, as she reveals which supporting character from the American Gods novel is stepping up big time for the TV show. Spoilerphobes may want to stop reading now, ’cause we are doing this. You’ve been warned!

OK, you good?

One of the fan-favorite characters from the book was Mad Sweeney, a leprechaun who went off on his own for portions of the story. Pablo Schreiber is playing Mad Sweeney on the show, and if our source is correct, we’re gonna actually see a lot of what he was doing when he wasn’t present in the novel.

That could mean a few things. Mad Sweeney’s magic coin plays a key part Shadow Moon’s story, and we may get to see Sweeney’s search for his beloved coin. Or perhaps we’ll even get to see excerpts from his 4,000 year history—including his journey to America. There is also the possibility that Mad Sweeney will be used as a way to establish origin stories for the gods who came to America, even though he isn’t technically a god himself.

American Gods won’t premiere until 2017, so we’ve got plenty of time to keep digging for more answers!

Are you excited that Mad Sweeney is getting an expanded role on American Gods? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
