AMC Greenlights Pilot for Second THE WALKING DEAD Series

The pilot for an untitled The Walking Dead “companion series” is going before cameras this December, according to Entertainment Weekly. Featuring new characters and a new setting, the new show will focus on another corner of creator Robert Kirkman’s zombie universe.

The new series will bring on Kirkman and The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd, while Son of Anarchy‘s Dave Erickson will serve as showrunner. As for other The Walking Dead talent coming to the series – it sounds like Hurd and Kirkman are it. AMC’s looking for something new, not another series featuring Rick and his less-than-merry band of zombie apocalypse survivors in a different location.

So what can we expect from a second, standalone The Walking Dead series? Kirkman told the site, “There are many corners of The Walking Dead universe that remain unseen in the shadows,” which could either mean anything from Kirkman and Erickson exploring the plague in greater detail to seeing how non-civilian types have survived the apocalypse. We’ve only seen bits of the military and the government explored in the show, and it would be interesting if the series followed people trained to survive in circumstances that are almost impossible to survive.

Personally, I’m more curious about what the new setting will be. The woods and ruined cities of the American South have been find for The Walking Dead, but what if we got to see some of the more cramped metropolises of the Northeast? While shooting in someplace like New York or Philly would be prohibitively expensive, it’d be interesting to see some of the block-to-block battles survivors would have to endure in Times Square or the like.

In the meantime, the season five premiere of The Walking Dead is on October 12. Maybe that’ll offer some clues as to what we can expect from the companion series?*

*Probably not.

  1. Patrick says:

You could film in Detroit, it would cost almost nothing and no one would even know you were there.

  2. Lulu says:

I really wish instead that they would get the original series back up to par. Sort of disappointing news.

  3. Jon says:

Maybe they’ll shoot in Detroit…plenty of set ready buildings to be had for much less than anywhere else in North America.

  4. Captain_Awsome says:

I would say Texas, but we would have that whole “Zombie Apocolypse” thing settled in two weeks… a month tops. I do love how almost all apocholypse fiction I have read(a lot) The great state of Texas is alwayse “overrun with canables, or abandoned”. I assure you all we have plenty of renewable agricultural items to eat, andenough trained gun owners to keep that from happening

  5. Isabelle Mauvaise says:

Philadelphia will let film companies rape the city to make a movie here. Very accommodating.

  6. anthony says:

Alaska would be cool. Think about it, cold and icy half the year oh and stays night?!?! The cherry on the sundaeā€¦.. isolation year round

    or another country maybe?

  7. John says:

Have you ever noticed that nearly ALL TV series take place in Los Angelas or New York areas? Yes zombies would be a real problem anywhere but I am glad that the series takes place in Georgia because too many people in the “entertainment” business consider the rest of the country “fly over” and have little regard for the rest of us. I agree with the poster who wanted to place the series in Pennsylvania because George Romero placed his original film there and it worked well.

  8. Chaz Linn says:

They need to come to Pittsburgh, we are the zombie survival capitol of the world after all!

  9. 1badtopher says:

Didn’t they say like a year ago, that they were working on a second series that would be about a large community of survivors? Yeah, they were talking about showing how the state of the world has changed the dynamic of a settled safe haven.

  10. The spinoff- “The Embalmed Dead”- they don’t move at all, so FX and production costs are markedly reduced.

  11. michaelscott says:

They need to shoot it in Detroit. The place is already a mess, so there’s lots of real life apocalyptic production value, plus there would be the added story element of how they handle a winter in the north.

  12. Dublin Mike says:

How about based on the telltale series? Would love to see Clementine and Lee

  13. Cory says:

I’d like to see them explore it in a different climate, such as, a colder climate. Encapsulate the difficulties of trying to survive in cold and snow.

  14. Danielle says:

OH! maybe they can bring back Morgan Jones!! After seeing him the second time… when he went crazy from losing his son… I would love to see where he is now!

  15. Shayde says:

HOLLYWOOD!!! Love to see cameos of celebs as zombies. Or maybe Florida, where you can’t tell the walking dead from the residents.

  16. Marty says:

i though Kirkman had said we would never know the origins of the plauge.  He said he wasn’t interested in telling that story.  It’s been done a million times already.  Either way,  I’m excited.

  17. OTGGamer says:

I’m getting a little bit of a CSI / NSCI vibe from this announcement. Will we be getting TWD: Miami or TWD: Las Vegas

  18. Cptn_awsome says:

Maybe Kirkman could team up with fellow author John Ringo, and bring Under a Graveyard Sky to life. A group of survivors at sea would definately be adifferent look.

  19. Las Vegas. That is All.
