Amazon to Offer Monthly Video Subscription, Not Just Prime

So far, the war for streaming video supremacy has been won by Netflix. It’s easily the most subscribed of the major services, despite Hulu and Amazon offering newer shows faster. Well, Amazon is trying to up their game considerably and has delivered the first major blow against Netflix. No, not just because they exclusively have Doctor Who now. Amazon is offering a monthly video subscription service in addition to its annual Prime package. That means, you no longer have to pay $99.00 all at once.

As reported by Deadline, there will now be two Amazon options beyond the yearly Prime subscription; a monthly Amazon Video service for $8.99 per month offers all of the movie and television options that Prime does, but without free shipping on items purchased through Amazon.com and without access to Prime Music services. There will also be a $10.99/month Prime membership option, if you want all the benefits of the yearly program but with more freedom to cancel any time you wish. You’ll be paying more annually for that freedom, but it’s now there if you want it.

With this announcement of $8.99 for the basic Amazon Video service, the company is directly taking aim at rival Netflix, which will hike its basic service up to $9.99 per month beginning in a couple of weeks. And with all the new and exclusive programming on Amazon, including the Golden Globe-winning Mozart in the Jungle and the recently announced The Tick reboot, it might be the first major victory in the streaming game for the opponents of the red-logo wunderkind.

Will you start subscribing to Amazon now because of this? Is Netflix’s supremacy breaking down a bit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
