The Primetime Creative Arts Emmys Show was held last night in Los Angeles to celebrate the technical disciplines and behind-the-scenes crafts that make your favorite television show the polished presentation you tune into week after week. Awards were given out in categories including casting, art direction and cinematography, lighting design, hair and makeup, music, special visual effects, stunts, and more. In addition to these traditional award categories, the Creative Emmys honor digital technology as well. Comedy Central’s @midnight hosted by our own Chris Hardwick was nominated in the interactive programming arena. The award went to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Digital Experience, but we’re incredibly proud of our fearless leader and all the great and talented people on the @midnight staff.
HBO, NBC and PBS were the big winning networks of the evening with 15,10 and 8 awards respectively. Guest-star Emmys were won by Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black, Jimmy Fallon for his appearance on Saturday Night Live, Allison Janney of Masters of Sex, and Joe Morton of Scandal. Jane Lynch won her first for her reality series hosting work on Hollywood Game Night. Casting awards went to Orange is the New Black, Fargo, and True Detective. Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and House of Lies took home art direction awards.
The roster of animation awards was long and featured repeated appearances by a very famous Mouse, Gravity Falls, Bob’s Burgers, Adventure Time, Robot Chicken DC Comics Special II: Villians in Paradise, The Power Puff Girls, Uncle Grandpa, and of course, The Simpsons.
Costume and hairstyling awards were given to American Horror Story: Coven (miniseries) and Saturday Night Live (variety show), while Game of Thrones and So You Think You Can Dance took costuming awards (for series and variety, respectively) and Downton Abbey, hairstyling for a series. COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey , Black Sails and Sherlock: His Last Vow were honored in sound editing and music categories. Makeup awards were given to Saturday Night Live, True Detective, and The Normal Heart, and an award for prosthetic makeup went to Game of Thrones.
Stunt honors were given to The Blacklist and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and special and visual effects honors went to Black Sails and Game of Thrones.
Anthony Bourdain‘s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown tied with Vice for an Informational Series Emmy.
Harry Shearer was honored for his long-time voice-over work on The Simpsons with an Emmy in Character Voice-Over Performance. He voices Kent Brockman, Mr. Burns, Younger Burns and Smithers (but you knew that already).
Jon Voight gave a moving tribute to Marion Dougherty, the iconic casting director who was posthumously awarded the Governor’s Award. She died in 2011. She gave first breaks to legends like Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Ed Asner, Anne Bancroft, Bette Midler, and Voight himself.
Over the course of the evening, presenters included Amy Schumer, Allison Janney, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Morgan Freeman, Tony Goldwyn, Aisha Tyler, Joe Manganiello and Carrie Preston.
The Creative Emmys are traditionally presented the weekend before the Primetime Emmys which will air on Monday, August 25th on NBC at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
