ALL IN THE FAMILY, THE JEFFERSONS, and GOOD TIMES May Be Rebooted by Sony

Next year, Norman Lear‘s One Day at a Time is getting rebooted at Netflix, with Lear attached as an executive producer and contributor. Now, three of Lear’s most popular sitcoms may also be up for a reboot, but with Lear’s scripts intact!

According to Variety, Sony is reportedly looking to revive All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Good Times with brand new casts and the full support of Lear himself. The twist is that these won’t be modernized takes on the classic shows from the ’70s. Instead, Sony is looking to use the new casts to recreate episodes from the original runs as written by Lear. Essentially, Sony is viewing the recreations as “plays being mounted in new productions.”

In theory, that would also maintain the time period of each series, if the scripts aren’t brought up to date. Nor would these be open ended revivals like One Day at a Time; Sony wants to release the new editions of each series as a six-episode anthology miniseries. The report notes that this is separate from Lear’s previous attempt to revive All in the Family with a Latino family as the focus. Apparently, that eventually morphed into the One Day at a Time revival.

All three of these series were groundbreaking at the time for their willingness to address racism, sexism, and other social issues through the lens of Lear’s comedy. But these shows are very much of their time, and it’s going to be extremely difficult for anyone to step into the roles that Carroll O’Connor, Sherman Hemsley, and Jimmie Walker made famous. That said, Lear’s stories were worth telling, and if they can find a new audience through a new cast then it may ultimately be a good thing.
