Alex Ross, John Cassaday, Greg Land and More Cover Marvel’s LANDO # 1

Billy Dee Williams may not be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but Star Wars is far from done with Lando Calrissian!

This July, Marvel Comics is giving Lando his first solo miniseries with the blockbuster creative team of writer Charles Soule and artist Alex Maleev. Soule is a famously prolific scribe who has previously written Death of Wolverine, Uncanny Inhumans, Inhuman, and She-Hulk for Marvel. Maleev is best known for his stunning run on Daredevil alongside writer Brian Michael Bendis, with whom Maleev also collaborated with on Spider-Woman and Moon Knight.

Forget everything you know about Lando outside of the movies. The Star Wars Expanded Universe is just a legend now, and Soule gets to be the first writer to explore Lando’s life before he became the owner of Cloud City…but apparently after he lost the Millennium Falcon to Han Solo. And quick, somebody tell Damon Lindelof that Soule also has Lando’s right-hand man, Lobot, in this five issue miniseries…which apparently invalidates Lobot’s previous origin as well.

To mark Lando’s debut as a solo comic book star, Marvel has lined up eight cover artists. Maleev is doing the main cover, and there’s a movie variant with Williams in character from The Empire Strikes Back. The other Lando variant covers were provided by Alex Ross, Greg Land, John Cassaday, John Tyler Christopher, Leinil Yu, and Scottie Young. Additionally, four of Maleev’s interior Lando pages have been released by Marvel without lettering.

Here’s the official description of Lando # 1 from Marvel.

“You know him…you love him…now, join him for his biggest caper as master of charm Lando Calrissian gets his very own comic book! Before he joined the rebellion, before he ran Cloud City, Lando made his way in the galaxy getting by on some swindles, some swagger, and a smile. Lobot at his side, Lando has a plan to steal a very valuable ship…but has he bitten off more than he can chew? Writer Charles Soule and artist Alex Maleev bring us the tale of a scoundrel in his natural element—trouble!”
