Watch a Tribe of Stormtroopers Cover Adele’s ‘Hello’

You’d be hard-pressed to name two bigger pop culture events going on in the world right now than Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Adele‘s new album. So it was inevitable they would find a way to come together sooner rather than later. I just doubt any of us expected it to be in the form of an African tribal cover song that includes lightsabers and a Stormtrooper struggling with his identity.

Singer Alex Boye took on Adele’s hit single from her album 25, singing “Hello” all while dressed as, and reenacting many of the ubiquitous shots of, Finn from the many The Force Awakens commercials and trailers—including the one of him rising with his stormtrooper helmet removed, and him desperately looking out over Jakku.

Add in some contrasting shots of him also playing a menacing Sith Lord walking the desert with his lightsaber in hand, along with some chanting and great percussion, and you get this unique and beautiful rendition.

It would be easy to make jokes about how he should have changed the lyrics to something like, “Hello from the Dark Side,” but honestly, the video works with him essentially speaking to his former self—as though he once knew the light side of the Force, only to be seduced by the Dark Side.

Great art inspires, and this video is definitely a cool way to find inspiration from two very different venues of pop culture, all while paying homage to one’s own culture.
