AHS Hotel Recap: “She Gets Revenge”

Note: This post contains spoilers for FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel. Proceed with caution.

With last week’s episode of American Horror Story: Hotel titled, “She Wants Revenge,” and this week’s “She Gets Revenge,” the only thing I’ve been pondering as of late, is which “she” was going to get it. I say that because there is an abundance of women this season who’ve been wronged in one way or another, and are out to set things “right.” Liz, Ramona, Iris, Alex, and who knows who else, all have it out for The Countess, while the lady of the house herself has her sights set on multiple targets. While we won’t really know who is going to come out on top (thanks to a massive cliffhanger) until the show returns for the final two episodes in January, things have certainly been set in motion.

Before we dig into the juicy details from this week’s episode, I’ll give you a minute to reflect on Matt Bomer’s glorious “Hotline Bling” dance break.

Ahhh. Why did it have to end? I never thought I’d find myself bursting with laughter while watching an episode of American Horror Story: Hotel, but there you have it.

Anyways, time to get down to business. As per usual, there were a bunch of stories to follow this week. Heartbroken and fed up, Liz was on a quest to end her life, but as Iris pointed out, she’d be trapped in the hotel forever if she had any unfinished business. According to Liz, the only thing left for her before she passes on is reconciling with her son Douglas and apologizing to him for leaving him. So, with the help of Ms. Evers, Liz was able to chat with her adult son.

Though he didn’t (or acted like he didn’t) recognize her during their first meeting, Liz’s son ended up telling her that he would be able to have another woman in his life. It truly was a heartwarming moment, but instead of giving Liz peace of mind, it gave her pause. When she met with Iris later on, she told her that she was having second thoughts because her son wanted her in her life after all. She talked about the possibility of having grandchildren one day, which saddened Iris because she felt like she had nobody in her own life. After seeing Iris’s sadness, Liz told her that they were the ones who needed to act and take over the hotel. They needed to get their revenge on The Countess once and for all and take what was rightfully theirs. If there’s anything I’ve loved about this season, it’s been seeing these two together.

That of course wasn’t the only family reunion we saw this week. After murdering some more people, John teamed up with Alex to take care of the vampire kid problem she accidentally created–but, not before John brought up Scarlet, and finally voiced what we’ve all been thinking–they’re terrible parents. With Alex and Holden’s lives on the line, John decided to help his wife sort things out. When they showed up at the kids’ hangout, they were met with hostile resistance until the kids wised up and finally decided to come back to the Cortez with her.

Little did they know, Alex and John’s idea of taking care of them involved locking them in the doorless prison-like hallway with Ramona. I’m not sure what’s going to happen to them in there; whether Ramona is going to off them one by one, if they’re going to gang up on her, or if they are going to team up and find a way out, but I’m guessing whatever it is is going to be messy. The kids were already divided after having been tricked and betrayed by Alex, so there’s no telling what’s going to happen. All we know is that they’ve been taken care of, for now..

With that pesky problem out of the way, Alex and John took their newfound alliance to the bedroom. With emotions at an all time high, John told Alex that he didn’t want to divorce her, and things looked good until she brushed him off and left to check on the children. While she was gone, a jealous Sally approached John and reminded him that she was he one who was there for him when Alex left. To this, he likened his love of her to an addict’s high, meaning it felt good in the moment, but it always went away. She didn’t really take that response well, and told John that Alex would leave him again when she found out he was a serial killer. But John wasn’t phased, because the only thing he had on his mind (we think) was saving his family. Towards the end of the episode, John reunited with Holden, and they walked out of the hotel with Alex.

The Countess was clueless about most of the goings on this week, because she was busy with her own affairs. For starters, she killed Natascha, and had to deal with the consequences for killing Will Drake on the premises. She’ll no doubt have to deal with the lady vamp’s spirit for the rest of eternity as well, but it seemed worth it to her in the short term. When the Countess confessed this to Donovan, he revealed that he’d killed Valentino, the Countess’ true love. I’m surprised we didn’t see an immediate explosive reaction from her after hearing the news, but seeing her in tears made more sense. The only time we’ve seen her human side is when she was talking about him.

While the countess was out verifying his story, Donovan was in the suite dancing to “Hotline Bling,” and it was glorious. Instead of running for his life, he was in the hotel, drinking and dancing around to a Drake song. When the Countess interrupted him, they had a tearful conversation about how Donovan killed Valentino and how he didn’t mind if she killed him for it because he believed dying was the only way she would let him love him. In the midst of their conversation, Iris and Liz burst through the door, guns a-blazin to a reprise of “Hotline Bling.” I don’t know if any of those shots hit their target because the credits rolled, but it doesn’t matter because it was hands down the best thing to have happened on American Horror Story to date.
