Aftermarket Body Parts

If your hand was busted to the point of uselessness, would you prefer to have this?:

The issue that’s arisen is one that’s happened twice thus far in Austria, where two guys have elected to have a hand amputated and replaced with a bionic version that lets them do things like pinch and grasp and tie their shoelaces. One guy’s had it done, another’s in the process.

So, if you could have a body part cut off and replaced by a bionic version that works better, which one would you… oh, come on, not that.  You guys are sick.  Besides, I don’t think hydraulic technology is quite at that level yet.

(If the BBC takes the above video down, you’ll find it here)

Huh. I could have sworn that there was some sort of metallic thing attached to Worf’s back in that episode. I last saw it in 1995, though, so I’ll defer to you on that point.

But can we at least agree that Worf’s a great big baby?

  2. bob canada says:

If someone chose to get their (healthy) hand cut off just so they could get a cool bionic replacement, then that’s not right. But if your real hand is useless, then why not?

I bet as bionics improve and become more commonplace, elective replacement is going to become an issue.

And Paul, I’m gonna have to be THAT guy and point out that Worf didn’t get a bionic spine. If I remember correctly Dr. Crusher’s colleague replicated him a new organic one from his own DNA.

  3. Ken Kreisel says:

Probably knees, because let’s face it, whether your 4 years old or 60 years old, walking up stairs still still suck.

  4. Ian says:

for me it would have to be eyes, for sure, as long as i have the same dynamic rage of color but obviously it could make the viewing experience for any visual media thousands(if not more) of times better. this would all be assuming that any and all kinds are worked out. next i end up going deep into ghost in the shell territory with stuff like cybernetic minds ect.

  5. @LesserBeing – Right? Actually, I think he’s having a terrific time celebrating this month! I’m glad I’m not the only one whose mind that did cross.

  6. Gabriel says:

    @Paul,

I know what you mean. It is such a bizare feeling. Never having met any of the people of the Nerdist podcast I still feel like I have. I listen to them every few days. They talk about their lives and I feel myself worrying about Matt and his bad back. I feel happy everytime he has lost more weight like he is a friend. Makes me feel weird.

  7. paul says:

Sadly, I’m at the age where I’d probably just ask for bionic knees that bend completely and don’t hurt in the presence of any sort of humidity.

Also, I’d like to see Matt get one of those bionic spines like they gave Worf the one time a bunch of empty plastic crates fell on him in the loading bay. (Worf is SUCH a baby.)

  8. PunchKicker says:

Why… that would make you… some kind of cybernetic “KickPuncher”. And I would have to destroy you.

  9. Tony says:

I don’t know. Could I punch with the power of kicks?

  10. Colonel Steve Austin says:

Absolutly. I want to see the VA start paying for this stuff for all of the injured service men and women out there.

  11. Blaine Kehl says:

Maybe. It would have to be super strong. Perhaps with lasers that shoot from the finger tips.

  12. Glad to see that there is something like this available out there. I can imagine someone without a hand.
    Thanks

  13. Scully says:

Hand down yes! (no joke intended) The robotics looks super cool I would want to leave the flesh colored outer casing off.

I have a family member who lost the use of her hand and had multiple painful surgeries to try and regain some function and it still only is barely capable of doing what these prostetics can. I know if she was a candidate she would not hesistate.

  14. Everyone knows that replacements are okay, but enhancements get you dark side points. And atoning is a bitch.

  15. LesserBeing says:

amazing! but on the other hand(sorry) i hope he’s a righty or he’s going to have a tought time celebrating this month

  16. 9Lives says:

It was pretty damn impressive to start with, but when he rotated at the wrist 360 my mind broke. It’s one thing to replace, but to enhance, that is on a whole new level.

  17. Only my sofa pulls out says:

Eyeballs for x-ray vision and other HUD awesomeness. Skull for headbutting destruction.

  18. Devin Smail says:

I would have my legs replaced so that I could become a master of kick-centric martial arts. See that’s why the Terminator failed, he was all guns.
    ShishAAAH!

  19. Jenovapooh says:

YES! No question I would have a limb replaced with a better version!!
