There’s a hard and fast rule in modern comics that goes something like this: if Jeff Lemire’s name is on a comic book, you buy that comic book. With that in mind, you should all already have Plutona #1 on your pull lists, but if you need an extra push we are happy to provide that. Rest assured, Plutona is as heartfelt and beautiful as any of Lemire’s pervious works, and the artwork from Emi Lenox is like a breath of fresh air. Hold to the rule, guys. Buy this comic book.

The story is a mixture of Lemire’s past works. It’s got that small town, human feeling of his graphic novels, but captures the big scope of his more recent science fiction work. The cast is a group of misfit kids that would feel at home in a John Hughes film — only these kids live a superhero universe. This doesn’t stop them from having fairly normal pre-teen lives, filled with anger, frustration, and awkwardness. That is, of course, until you get to the last page of the comic and realize that these kids are about to have their whole world upended. It’s beautiful stuff, for sure.

Even without the aforementioned hard and fast rule, you should be buying this comic book for the supremely awesome artwork from Emi Lenox. A good comic script is meaningless without good comic art, and Lenox brings it in spades. Her unique style brings plenty of emotion and energy to the cast and fills their world with nuance and character. Every panel is expertly detailed and rendered to perfection. I don’t want to oversell it, but I think just looking at this comic book will make you a better, happier person. You don’t even have to read it. Just look at it and let Lenox’s wonderful, lived-in world seep into your brain. Oh yeah, and Jordie Bellaire colors. Bellaire colors are literally always a good thing.

You, like me, are no doubt always on the look out for something fresh and new to add to your weekly read pile. You want something that feels different, but is captivating and easy on the eyes. Well, starting this September, Plutona should be your new thing. Buy the first issue and spend some time with two comic creators who are doing fantastic work.
