Adele Broke NSYNC’s First-Week Sales Record in under Four Days

Hello, record books. I was wondering if you’d heard about these sales numbers.

In today’s “not-really-all-that-surprising-news-that-is-still-somehow-completely-staggering,” Adele’s new album, 25, has broken the single week U.S. album sales record, and she’s done it with three more days to go in the week.

Billboard reports that the album has already sold more than 2.433 million copies in just over three days, breaking the previous record held by NSYNC, whose album No Strings Attached sold 2.416 million copies in its first week in March of 2000. Nielsen began tracking these numbers in 1991.

This is remarkable considering the marked decline in music sales since those halcyon days, and with three more left to rack up sales, Adele is going to shatter the previous record. This album will probably break another record next month—though that will be an unofficial one for the most returned Christmas gift of all-time. Not because people don’t love it (please, it’s Adele), but because everyone will already own a copy by the end of December.

If you’ve been sitting at your computer every day watching the video for the album’s first single, “Hello”, you probably saw this coming. The video posted on October 22nd, and already has over 476 million views, inspiring countless parodies and tributes. It is a true cultural phenomenon, and one that looks like it is only beginning. What will these sales numbers look like by the end of the month?

Are you one of the many people that has already purchased the album? If so, what is your favorite track off of 25? Tell us in the comments below.
