Adele Performed “Hello” with Classroom Toy Instruments and It’s Perfect

Adele’s global smash hit “Hello” has been dominating the airwaves—a fact you could have avoided only if you abstained from all forms of media and human interaction for the past month. What you may not know, though, is that while the song has been successful in most key demographics, one group of potential listeners aren’t necessarily feeling it: elementary school students.

Perhaps that’s because they can’t relate to the lush instrumentation of “Hello,” so in an attempt to win over that crowd, Adele partnered up with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for a rendition of the song on melodica, bongos, xylophone, plastic banana shaker, and other classroom instruments.

The numbers are in, and as of this posting, the video taken from last night’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has nearly a million views—so it’s safe to deem this version a success. While the original recording is a soaring lamentful ballad, the lighthearted instrumentation of this version provides a stark contrast to the inherent sadness of “Hello,” and makes the tune downright happy, or at least bumps it up to optimistic melancholy.

Adele even provided a not-so-subtle easter egg in the clip, referencing the oft-maligned flip phone she used in the song’s official music video by whipping out a green plastic toy phone and belting the lyrics into it. With the content of her music, it’s easy to forget that Adele is actually a happy human who likes to have fun: her “Box of Lies” segment from the same show is further evidence of that.

What do you think of this rendition? Let us know in the comments.
